Cinema, cinemo

With plans apparently advancing very quickly on proposals to open a new cinema on the site of The Cell nightclub in Shawlands in a similar style to the highly successful Grovenor cinema in the city's west end, we thought it would be interesting to give the link to a site which explores the history of cinema in Glasgow. http://www.scottishcinemas.org.uk/glasgow/index.html If you look around the site you will see the section on the White Elephant Cinema which was on the site of The Cell many moons ago. Nice to see it coming back to life - wonder if it will be named after its old name.

Back in the day, before the TV box invaded our homes, everyone went to the cinema and at one time Glasgow had over 50 working cinemas operating all day everyday.

I think we now only have 7 now so another one within walking distance of Shawlands will be very welcome.

There a few bits of good info on hidden Glasgow -

And an old article on the Extra website
