Goodbye Woolies
It's sad times all round the country at the moment - with stores closing left, right and centre - first there was the loss of furniture kit extraordinaries MFI and I just read this morning that Zavvi has gone into administration too now - they have a pretty stupid name though which has always put me off shopping there.
The big one of course is the loss of Woolies which would be 100 years old next year. I have very found memories of the Woolies in Shawlands - one of my earliest memories is going there on Saturday mornings to buy Ladybird books when I was a wee one - and I've still got a couple of wooden chairs my parents bought there when they first got married. Where will the Shawlands locals buy their pick n mix now or small spanners, kids costumes, car repair kits, magazines and most importantly toys - there will be nowhere to get toys now.
Sadly we've only got a couple of weeks of the store that sells everything left - Shawlands will shut up shop on Jan 5th with other stores closing at different dates from December the 27th. For the dates of your nearest store - see below.
The only small positive in all this is that the group that own the arcade claimed that Woolworths (who owned their own building) were the only reason stopping them completely refurbishing the whole centre. So in the sad demise of woolies there might be a complete change and rebirth of shawlands - or maybe in the current climate nothing will happen and the stores will all lie empty for the next 50 years.
