The Great Skirving Street Giveaway - Happy Birthday to us

It’s our third birthday this month, and being better than the Queen, we are preparing birthday celebrations for the whole month of April. We’ve also decided that receiving gifts is a bit old hat and have decided, with the help of some Southside businesses to shower birthday gifts on our readers.

As most of you know we love Skirving Street, there’s an interesting bunch of unique shops, café’s and restaurants located there. It’s a street that we should all support because interesting, one off, independent establishments make our cities a more interesting and enjoyable place to live.

So with the help of the Skirving Street shops: Odd Bins, Deli 1901, Blue Lagoon, Cosgrove Care, Biscuit, Girasoil, The Dressers Room, Youngs Interesting Books, Butterfly Kisses, 16 Cosgrove, Altura Restaurant, Beanscene, Skirving Peking and Cantonese, and RW Stevens we’re having the biggest birthday giveaway ever*

So here is the prize list: Lunch for two at the Altura restaurant*, Fish Supper from Blue Lagoon, a beautiful pair of vintage earrings from The Dressers Room, a lovely bottle of wine from Odd Bins, tea and cake or lunch at Biscuit**, a fantastic expresso mocha pot and 1901 coffee from Deli 1901, a very nice chess set from Cosgrove Care, a free hair cut from Girasol, a beautifully designed Earl & Pearl mug and tea towel from the lovely Butterfly Kisses, £20 worth of books at Young's Interesting Books, and last but not least coffee and cake for two from Beanscene.

To enter you must be one of the following; our friend on Facebook, our follower on Twitter, signed up to our RSS email or signed up to our Mailing List.

Then just leave your name and a comment below on the subject "Name your favourite place ie shop, theatre, restaurant in the Southside and why" and you'll be entered into the draw. Please try to make sure it will be easy to identify you. If possible leave a link to your webpage, blog, Facebook or twitter in the little URL option of the comments box.

The competition will run the whole of our birthday month and prizes drawn on 30 April. For all the rules etc  click here.

My favourite place is the Granary. Really good atmosphere, excellent music, sports, a good glass of wine and ( here's the most important bit) a PIE PLATTER. Beccy (I am @beccymeister on Twitter).

I have to say Butterfly Kisses... It's a great place to treat yourself, or get gifts and cards for others, although i do tend to want EVERYTHING when i'm in - I've had to be dragged out a tad too many times! Is it wrong to hope that someone moves house purely so that you can get them a housewarming gift from BK's amazing selection of loveliness!?

Young's interesting books also. As well as a treasure trove of great old books, it's a great place to see the graphic design of yesteryear on some of those book covers. Inspirational.

Young's Interesting Books it is. Beansceners, I'd have never managed to function without your administrations of coffee and flapjacks, but I'm afraid you're not an Alladin's cave of books numbering amongst them a living breathing 1st edition Spike Milligan book of random thoughts.

Fav place is Maxwell Park clean, quiet, and never too many people about, in the summer loads of open space to spread out and lie in the sun and shade for the kids.

Fav food spot is Gusto and Relish, although since Cookie has uped their game and improved their service they are slowing but surley heading for the top spot.

loving the south,

The three different Cosgrove Care shops on Skirving Street are seriously awesome.

Half my younger life went into the shops (in the form of nik-naks, toys, furniture etc) due to my mum being a volunteer there and now half of my adult life has been foraged from the donations.

There are some pretty spectucular finds in there. Cannot recommend the shops enough and all of the money goes to a great cause- adults and childrens with learning difficulties.

Some of the adults Cosgrove help volunteer in the shop. Go in and see what you can find!

I find it really hard going anywhere for lunch/coffee but Tapa. Wonderful place!

For drinks, I'm a fan of the Allison Arms. The beer fridge at the back is one of the most exciting surprises in Glasgow.

The essence of rummaging. Great chat with the ladies and plenty of 70's crockery that will no longer fir into my cupboards. I wish that I could remeber that it doesn't open Saturdays however.

Very hard to choose but for consistently tasty food, cuddly ethics and pleasant atmosphere it has to be Tapa. Whether you're there for brunch, dinner or a post-night out coffee, it's always an excellent choice.

The bread is delicious, the cakes are fantastic and the coffee is second to none. Cookie is a close second, but I've found the service, though always friendly, to be a bit hit or miss.

My only complaint about Tapa is that they stopped doing their stall at the farmers' market. Can we start a campaign to bring it back please?

I'm a big fan of Tramway. It has a really interesting choice of exhibitions (The current Christoph Büchel installation is a must see)and is also a nice place to go for some tea and cake at lunch. The secret garden is a great place to sit and relax- just a pity it gets so busy on hot sunny days!

I would have to say the green spaces. Pollock park, The Hidden Gardens and Queens park where I walk though everyday on my way to work and am sometimes lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Ben Lomond on a clear day. The southside is doing a good job of keeping up Glasgow rep as the 'Dear Green Place'!

I love Langside Place, and not just because I grew up there but because of the community-spirit of the neighbourhood - some of the people on that street have been there for decades. I also love the Langside Cafe for staying pretty much exactly as it was 30 years ago - the milkshakes are magic, the irn-bru snow drinks are supreme, the array of sweeties are amazing and there is nothing better than sitting in there, enjoying good food and drink and people watching the customers as they come and go. I love Langside Place!!!!
