Shawlands Cross and Waverley Park Draft Conservation Area Appraisal
The council are currently looking to expand the area of the Southside that is considered a conservation area to include Shawlands Cross and Waverley Park. This would allow additional funding streams to be made availible for improvements and repairs to the urban realm and built fabric of the area and we think would be really great news for the Southside. Below is some text from their site about it and a link to the Draft conservation Appraisal that they are pulling togther. They are keen to hear views from the public and to gather more information on the history of the area so pop along to the meeting at Shawlands Academy this Thursday at 7pm for more info and to get involved.
"In recognition of the important role the historic environment could play in the regeneration of the area, the City Council has prepared a Draft Conservation Area Appraisal of Shawlands Cross. Following the commitment set out in City Plan 2 (2009), and in response to requests from local members and residents, the Council has also included a study of Waverley Park as a potential Conservation Area. The Draft study highlights the quality of the historic environment to be found at Shawlands Cross and Waverley Park and proposes the designation of two distinct conservation areas.
The Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan of 2012 identified Shawlands Cross as a potential conservation area and the Draft Appraisal considers this proposal in more detail. Related to the proposed designation of a conservation area is the proposed City Council bid for Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) status for Shawlands Cross. Interest in the heritage of Shawlands and the identified need for investment in the historic environment around the Cross identify the area as a potential THI candidate. If successful, the scheme would aim to restore certain listed buildings, upgrade the public realm, improve shopfronts, encourage reuse of vacant property, and develop conservation skills and interpretation of the historic environment.
This consultation is your opportunity to influence whether or not the Council will progress these proposed designations.
Details regarding what potential conservation area status means to homeowners may be found on p2 of the document. According to current legislation, Conservation Area status will automatically mean that most householder development including replacement windows, re-roofing, extensions and installation of satellite dishes will require Planning Permission, for which a fee will be payable. Conservation Area status requires the character of an area to be maintained, but recognises the need for change, requiring a sensitive approach that respects, conserves and enhances the special character and attractiveness of the area. Property owners within conservation areas may be eligible to apply to the Glasgow City Heritage Trust for grant assistance for the restoration and repair of their properties and further details may be found on their website

A public meeting to explain the implications of designation and obtain your views on the proposals will take place on Thursday 27th September 2012 at 7pm in the Main Hall of Shawlands Academy, 31 Moss-side Road Glasgow.

As an aside, I find anything that refers to Shawlands as a town in it's own right cannot be taken seriously. Shawlands is a suburb (or district) of the city of Glasgow - not an independent town. Where's Shawlands Town Hall? Who's the Mayor of Shawlands? How often does Shawlands Town Council meet? You get the idea?
(The exact same thing goes for the clowns up the road at East Renfrewshire who would have you believe that Clarkston is a town.)
I'm sorry, but for me this issue gets in the way of potentially worthy causes such as this and reduces their credibility enormously. Am I alone in this view? I speak as someone born well within the city limits, many years ago.
"town centre" is an urban design term merely to designate an area that acts as a local hub for a wider community within a city, its not meant to suggest it acts as Town. Though of course many of the town centres in major cities were at one point separate entities and were villages/ Towns in their own right.
I think that regeneration projects like this one can have amazing benefits for the local area. Pumping money into an area can have an incredible effect on people and being a part of the restoration industry, I love seeing unique buildings being brought back to life. I've used my access platforms many a time to fix all sorts of buildings that represent the best of British architecture. It's important to protect and maintain our heritage, and not just build new buildings, where there are perfectly fine ones that just need a little work.
