Park future

Seeing we just posted a video about the history of one of Glasgow Park's I thought it might be interesting to post a video about the future of Pollok park. I'm ashamed to admit I haven't read enough about the situation to have a fully knowledgeable opinion on the whole thing but the transferring of public property into the hands of a private company does seem to be a pretty bad idea and building within public park land does seem a dodgy precedent. Why not have a read of the below two sites and see what you think. Also watch the above rather lovely film. Especially like the footage of folk wandering around the maze at the beginning.

We are sailing

Fun little shot of Queens Park from 1925 as part of Claude Friese-Greene's The Open Road - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.

For more information about 'The Open Road' see http://www.bfi.org.uk/features/openroad/To buy the DVD click here - http://www.bfi.org.uk/filmstore

Nice to see the park has always been a popular place to sail boats. Just a shame that some of the nice buildings spotted in the backgorund are no longer standing and the pond only has a wee green portocabin as the model boat folks club house.

FREE BREAKFASTS ON CAR FREE DAY

SPT TO GIVE AWAY FREE BREAKFASTS ON CAR FREE DAY

Leave your car at home and have a free breakfast on us! – that’s the message from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport for national Car Free Day.

The day of action on September 22 - part of European Mobility Week (16-22 September) - aims to encourage people onto public transport, bicycles or to walk.

As well as saving money, car free is the greener and healthier way to get to work.

And as an added incentive for Strathclyde residents to leave their cars at home, SPT is offering a free breakfast for travellers on its Subway network.

Passengers boarding at Buchanan Street, Shields Road, St Enoch or Kelvinbridge stations between 7am and 9am on September 22 will be offered a goodie-bag containing products and vouchers from event sponsors MacB fruit-flavoured drinks, Stoats porridge oat bars, Bradford bakers, James Mackie fresh fruit supplier, Subway sandwiches and Greggs bakers.

The free gifts will be given out at Fuelling Stations set up at these locations – with information about switching to public transport on hand.

There will also be a carnival atmosphere in Buchanan Street and St Enoch stations with upbeat morning songs from live performers to brighten up the daily commute.

SPT Chair Alistair Watson said: “We really want to drive home the message that public transport is safer, more reliable, cheaper, cleaner and greener than using a car – not to mention less stressful.

“Our free breakfast will no doubt encourage commuters onto the Subway during Car Free Day – but we want the people of Strathclyde to see public transport as a long-term option and make a total switch away from car use.

“With modern-day concerns like rising fuel costs, the credit crunch and global warming there’s never been a better time to make the change.”

For those passengers who need to drive part of the way to work, SPT offers Park and Ride facilities at its Kelvinbridge, Shields Road and Bridge Street Subway stations.

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
