What's up - ketchup

Ketchup - Southside - 1179 Pollockshaws Road, Shawlands,Glasgow South Side, G41 3NQ (behind the granary)
A friend has alerted us to the news that the newly closed JAM on Kilmarnock Road is about to be re birthed this Friday night as The Southside Social and Ketchup Southside. They are quite excited by this as they tell us that the original Ketchup in Ashton Lane is a delicious burger bar. This sounds like an interesting new addition to the Southside - even if it is part of what is the quite homogeneous G1 group but if our friend and the following review in the Herald are anything to go by it should prove very tasty. [Herald review]
There is a launch party Friday 30th at 7pm - see the link to register for tickets.
We shall endeavour to check it out and post our review. Fingers crossed its tasty - I have visions of this greasy burger place I went to in Brooklyn a couple of years ago where you got these amazingly tasty teeny tiny mini burgers called snax. If its half as good as that I'll be well happy.

The Glasgow Park Run - Pollok Park

The Glasgow parkrun is a fun, free, weekly, 5km timed run taking place in Glasgow's Pollok Park each Saturday morning.

It's for runners of all abilities, and has a strong social emphasis: Coffee and cake in the Burrell cafe afterwards!

The Glasgow parkrun joins the 10 other UK parkrun events, and is the first parkrun in Scotland. parkruns are organised entirely by volunteers. We start at 9.30am every Saturday, so arrive a bit before to get warmed up. There's plenty more at: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/glasgow/Home.aspx
 - It's entirely free, but wthey do ask that participants register before their first run.

So if you've recently taken up running, are looking for a great way to measure your progress, fancy meeting other runners in a friendly and supportive environment, or just fancy trying something different, we really hope the Glasgow parkrun will appeal.

Thanks to Richard Leyton for the above info.

Sub Rosa @ the Citizens

SUB ROSA
Written & Directed by David Leddy
A gothic Victorian promenade show through the secret backstage spaces of the Citizens Theatre.Out of the shadows comes a motley crew of sopranos, hoofers, chorines and wig-masters. They tell a haunting, mournful and darkly comic tale of yet another chorus girl burning to death beneath the stage while the show carried on above her head. Sub Rosa has been created especially for the Citizens by David Leddy, who has been described as a ‘theatrical maverick' (Financial Times), ‘one of the most interesting dramatic writers on the Scottish scene' (Scotsman) and ‘the rising star of Scottish theatre' (Observer).

Dolls at the tramway

I am finding myself drawn to anything Japanese, after our recent adventures... So this caught my eye...the Tramway are showing a play based on the Japanese film Dolls. It's being performed from Wednesday 28 January until Saturday the 31st @ 8.00pm. Opening night is only £5

More info
Adapted from the film by Takeshi Kitano with permission of Office Kitano Inc.Directed by Carrie Cracknell

Dolls is a film of extraordinary beauty from Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano. Now, for the first time, this deeply touching visual feast has been adapted for the stage.

Inspired by Japanese culture, Dolls draws upon stories old and new, to create a disquieting odyssey that weaves together three tales of undying love. Haunted by a tragic event before his wedding, a young man is tormented by his guilt. Bound by a blood-red cord to his damaged lover, they are destined to walk the earth together for all eternity.

Along the way a tale of true devotion unfolds as a women waits every day on the same park bench for the lover who deserted her three decades earlier. Intertwined is the story of a vain pop star who, following a disfiguring accident, forms a relationship with a disturbingly avid fan, determined to prove the extent of his obsession.

Hush Productions and National Theatre of Scotland Workshop have re-imagined the film, bringing to life this tender and fragile tale of love in all its many forms. Signed & Audio described performance: Saturday 31st January, 8pm Dolls

Butterfly Kisses - Skirving Street

The New Butterfly Kisses shop, on Skirving street in Shawlands, has been open for a couple of months now. I have been meaning to call in and have a browse, but with us being away in Japan and the crazy festive period I've not had a chance. However I came across these pictures on the Glasgow Architecture website today. The place looks great - it's been beautifully designed by Jonathan McQuillan. I've attached a few links to some articles about the new shop...but I can't find an actual website for the shop. I'll let you know what it's like once I've been

New Govan Health Care Building Scrapped

Back in 2007 we posted about the new community Health Care Partnership scheme in Govan. The building, designed by Glasgow Architects GM+AD, was to be located on Craigton road in Govan. It would have been the first "carbon-neutral" building in Scotland to be open to the public. The centre received planning permission in late November, but in December, Glasgow city council decided to scrap the project.
Councillor Elaine McDougall, executive member for social work, said they were 'disappointed' but that the council had to 'act responsibly in the current economic climate'.
I thought public projects would be safe in this economic down turn

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
