The Southside Six

The Southside Six Running event covers six parks, and over sixteen miles, of the Southside of Glasgow. The event takes place on October 30th at 11am, so is an ideal end of season run for experienced runners, or a great target for recreational joggers to spend their summer building up to.
The Southside Six will start near the flagpole in Queen’s Park. From there the route heads down through Battlefield towards King’s Park and then on to Linn Park. Leaving Linn Park the route passes through Clarkston Toll and onwards to Rouken Glen Park. Next stop is Pollok Country Park before the penultimate Bellahouston Park and finally back to Queen’s Park for the finish line at the flagpole. The total route is approximately 26km and

The Glasgow Park Run - Pollok Park

The Glasgow parkrun is a fun, free, weekly, 5km timed run taking place in Glasgow's Pollok Park each Saturday morning.

It's for runners of all abilities, and has a strong social emphasis: Coffee and cake in the Burrell cafe afterwards!

The Glasgow parkrun joins the 10 other UK parkrun events, and is the first parkrun in Scotland. parkruns are organised entirely by volunteers. We start at 9.30am every Saturday, so arrive a bit before to get warmed up. There's plenty more at: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/glasgow/Home.aspx
 - It's entirely free, but wthey do ask that participants register before their first run.

So if you've recently taken up running, are looking for a great way to measure your progress, fancy meeting other runners in a friendly and supportive environment, or just fancy trying something different, we really hope the Glasgow parkrun will appeal.

Thanks to Richard Leyton for the above info.

Womens 10km Run

The womens 10km run is on this Sunday. The race starts on Maxwell road. The ten km route takes the runners through Polloksheilds, Pollok park and then finally finishes at Bellahouston Park.
If you've not signed up to participate in the run, go along and cheer them on.
*Those who are not intending on going along - just remember all the roads around that part of town will be closed to traffic.

New Years Resolution

It's at this time of the year when we promise ourselves we'll be fitter, healthier, tidier, skinnier and then after a few weeks we can be found with our feet up eating a chocolate biscuit.
Glasgow's Women's Jogging Network course's start in early February. So if you fancy completing a 5km or the woman's 10km run, this could be the course for you. One of the course's is the 10km crash course, you meet up with a group of women, all beginner runners, many have never ran in their life's and there's a mix of ages from 18 to 70. The class meets twice a week for 12 weeks. In the first class you may run one minute and then walk for two or three, but by the end of the twelve weeks you will be able to run and complete the Women's 10km in May.
The feeling of setting a goal and achieving it is a fantastic feeling and completing the 10km is great and happens to be alot of fun.
The course is £53.50 for the 12 weeks and you can pick up a brochure in any Glasgow sport centre or you can telephone 0141 287 5079

Jingle Bell Run - Bellahouston Park

Everyone's getting into the Christmas spirit, even the Woman's Jogging Network. There hosting their annual Jingle Bell Fun Run on Saturday the 15th of December at 2pm.
I think it's a 5km [it doesn't say on the flyer] but there is a good 5km route through Bellahouston Park. Fancy dress is welcome, but it's not mandatory, so if you don't want to run round the park in a giant snowman outfit, that's quite understandable.
After the run there will be some festive themed food at the Palace of Art.

I've been really lazy lately and haven't been out running properly...so I may just go along and cheer you all on.

To book a place call the network on 0141 287 4450 it's £8 for members and £9 for non members.

The Great Scottish Run

Glasgow's Great Scottish Run, sponsored by Fresh 'n' Low, takes place on Sunday the 2nd of September and starts in George Square and finishes in Glasgow green, but the majority of the run is through the southside of the city. You have the option of running either the 10 km run or the half marathon. There is still time to sign up.

It's a great route taking you over Kingston Bridge, down Paisley Road West, through Bellahouston and Pollok park, then up through Shawlands and right down Pollokshaws road before turning into the Gorbals and across the river.

If your not up for taking part, get out on the street and give them a cheer.

Running Round Rouken

There's a 10km and a 5km run in Rouken Glen park on Thursday night, I am disappointed I won't be able to go as it seemingly a really nice route, though I've also heard it can be quite hilly in places....
You can register on the night at the park. So if your in need of a free t-shirt and goodie bag go along.

Running Classes

I went out running with the jogging network on Monday night, I normally go to two classes every week, one at the Gorbals and one at Bellahouston park. On Monday we were running one mile reps.

You can join the jogging network, as long as you can run three miles, if you can’t, you can join one of their beginners classes to get you up to the 3 mile mark.
It's really good fun

There are classes on everyday, at different places around the city, here are the southside classes

Monday 6.30pm – Gorbals Sport Centre
Tuesday 6.30pm - Holyrood Sport Centre

Wednesday 6.30pm – Bellahouston Sport Centre

Now it's the men's turn

I took part in the Glasgow women's 10km run yesterday. Over 12,000 women took part in the run, it was great fun and there was an incredible atmosphere. People lined the streets of the south side to cheer the runners on, and handed out jelly babies and cups of water to us. Obviously the best thing about completing the 10km, after the atmosphere and sense of achievement, is always the free tunnocks caramel wafer in your goodie bag.

For those blokes out there, who feel they missed out on a great day. There is a men's 10km at Bellahouston park, on the 18th of June 2007. There were 2500 runners last year, and this year they are aiming for over 5000 runners. So if your interested click on the link below

Get your running shoes on

I've been out training with my niece Gemma for this years Glasgow Resolution Asset 10 km women's run. The run takes place next Sunday [13th of May]. It starts at Bellahouston Park, and takes you through Maxwell park, Pollok park, and finishes back at Bellahouston park. It's great fun and the local southsiders are fantastic, last year there was a family in Pollok Park, giving out Jelly beans and water to the runners. So if you want to be one of the estimated 16,000 runners in this years event, there is still time to sign up.

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
