'Beyond the Tipping Point' - 29th September 2010

On the last Wednesday of every month, a community film night is held in St Brides School, in Craigie street, Govanhill. This month 'Beyond the Tipping Point' is being shown.
Beyond the Tipping Point? is a film about climate change and the ways we respond to it. Through the voices of 25 people from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities, the film addresses a fundamental challenge for our time: how the future is imagined, and how this imagination shapes our actions in the present.

This is not another film about the science or the ‘facts’ of global warming. It is an exploration of a deeper set of questions. How do we make sense of the idea that we may have a limited time frame for effective action? Is there ever a point after which all action comes too late? Does apocalyptic imagination lead to hope, or despair?

The film starts at 7pm  at St Brides Primary School, Craigie Street, off Allison St, Govanhill/Strathbungo.

The Sherlock Holmes Society of Scotland

Image by Hole in my Pocket [Prints for sale here]
Barry Young of Young's Interesting Books noticed something unusal, there are over 400 Sherlock Holmes Appreciation societies throughout the world but not a single one in the birthplace of his creator. Barry has therefore set out to correct this and is founding Scotland's first Sherlock Holmes Society right here in the Southside. He has set up a Facebook page about it here The Sherlock Holmes Society of Scotland.
As yet, they have no affilication with any other societies and the name of this page is a temporary idea, which may change after the members discuss an appropriate title for the group.
"Even if you've never read any of the 60 short stories or novels,... and just like the movie or the TV series, don't be shy. Anyone with an enthusiasm for the greatest fictional character ever created is very welcome."
The first meeting of this fun new group will be taking place Wednesday 29 September in The bar at The Boswell, Mansionhouse Road,Glasgow G41 3DN. Facebook link to the event here.
Looks like a lot of fun, sitting in comfortable chairs and chatting about good books.

Kate Thomson Sculpture @ House for an Art Lover

There is a great little show of the fantastic sculptor Kate Thomson's work on at the House for an Art lover right now until 30 September. Her work has a beautiful simple and delicate quality and plays with light in really interesting and unusal ways. Its well worth a trip to the HAL to see the show,

About Kate
"Kate Thomson is an established Scottish sculptor who has been working internationally for the last 20 years. After graduating in Fine Art from Newcastle University, she worked for 3 years as a community artist in the Gorbals in Glasgow, where in 1989 she was also one of the six Founding Directors of the Glasgow Sculpture Studios, before starting to work on site-specific public sculptures for parks, gardens, and buildings all over the world, from inner city re-developments and prestigious new building projects, to established sites like the British Embassy in Tokyo.

Kate Thomson’s work is abstracted from the human form and landscape, exploring relationships in physical, cultural and social space. Her beautifully crafted marble pieces use form to articulate light and life, and touch on something essential yet unique in all of us."

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
