Art on the Hill

Art on the Hill is a group showcase of Glasgow’s fine artistic talent. Running for the month of May upstairs in the amazing empty upper floor of the Church On The Hill, the exhibit will cover a diverse range of practices from painting, sculpture, photography and audio visual works.

"Art On The Hill will be taking place in the ‘Church On The Hill’ Battlefield Queens Park, as part of the Southside Fringe Festival in May 2014. We aim to be something of a new Glasgow Art Fair showcasing the work of around 100 artists. Bringing together select fresh faces just starting out, recent graduates from the Glasgow School Of Art, seasoned professionals and even some artists from Edinburgh!
The aim of this exhibition is to act as an artist run platform, where by the artists can show in a professional large group show without the prohibiting costs of mainstream art fairs and also allow the public access to the diverse breadth of artistic talent that is rampant in Glasgow.
Some of our artists are well established, some just starting out. But we welcome them all equally and hope you enjoy the art on show. Come an introduce yourself to some work by the artists who choose to call Glasgow home."
Artists featured include; Libby Walker, Hole in my Pocket, Martin Grubb and Michelle Cohen.

Boom Boom

Citizens Theatre and Gilly Roche present a brand new late night arts club called BOOMBOX!
"BOOMBOX is a series of late night surprise multi-arts events at the Citizens Theatre, produced and curated by Gilly Roche, producer of the hugely successful IF events at the Southside Studios in Summer 2013.
The Circle Studio will be transformed into an intimate, informal black box of tricks presented by some of Glasgow’s most dynamic artists. We’ll invite them for to let loose, celebrate, experiment and entertain.

It might be a gig by a big name musician, a work-in-progress performance, a movie night or a DJ led dance party. The bar will be open and we’ll keep things nice and informal. One thing is guaranteed - these events go BOOM!
10pm - midnight and this is the first of three, monthly BOOMBOX events in the Circle Studio. £7 a ticket and the bar will be open all night. AND it's a surprise line-up to that people can come and see their new favourite artists."
The IF events at the Southside Studios were great so the new nights at the Citz is sounding really interesting.

What a wonderful weekend

This Christmas, Albert Drive Studios are hosting what sounds like it will be a wonderful weekend of shopping, fun and food.
"Situated in the heart of Pollokshields in the Southside of Glasgow, Albert Drive Studios is a beautiful and charming Victorian Villa that is home to a variety of creative practictioners who will all be opening their studio doors to the public to take part in this truly unique event.
Jennie Lööf Clothes, Laura Spring and Patricia Berry Millinery will all be selling products that they design and make on the premises, from one-off pieces of fairytale clothing to hand printed bags to lovely, hand-made hats.
Joining them in opening their doors will be Edo Architecture and Vox Motus and the talented team behind “Dining at Albert Drive” also know as Hilary and Eta. They will be hosting a special pop-up cafe for the weekend serving some of the finest home made sweet and savoury refreshments in Glasgow.
In order to make this a Christmas shopping event not to be missed, a hand-picked selection of local designers have been invited to host their own stalls in the beautiful attic room. Expect to see stalls from such talents as Betty Spoke, Alan Gallacher, Hole in my Pocket, Tessa Dunlop, Eat Haggis and Ceilidh On and Karen Hepburn who will be selling all sorts of lovely treats from screen printed cards to cashmere scarves to hand painted russian dolls.
At 6pm on the Saturday evening, the attic room will be transformed from market space into a stage and the next level of the wonderful weekend will commence with an open mic night. This will run from 6-10pm. (Please note - the open mic night will be free, but ticketed so contact whatawonderfulweekend@gmail.com to arrange your ticket)."

DreamMakers

Community Arts Project with Roma youth in Govanhill. The launch is at Govanhill Baths on Tuesday 11th December from 5pm-7pm.

"Groups of young people from Roma, English Gypsy, Irish Traveller and Non Roma backgrounds in 4 different locations UK-wide (Glasgow, Bolton, Peterborough and Walthamstow) will be equipped with journalistic skills and the tools (photography, sound, video) to go out into their communities to research, record and discuss issues of relevance in their communities which impact on the aspirations of young people through a process of social documentation.
The aim of this project is to attempt to dispel prejudices among Roma, English Gypsy and Non Roma, encouraging the groups to work together, sharing skills and experience, towards a celebration of culture, a fusion of tradition and modern attitudes and to look forward to the future. It is also hoped that the project would be sustainable, serve as a model for inter cultural exchange and promote positive relationships using technology."

Railway Club - Colquhoun & Hollingswoth

New exhibition at the Railway Club, Queens Park Station.

From the website

"Colquhoun & Hollingsworth

Two Ruins Steve Hollingsworth and Jim Colquhoun are Two Ruins, a collaborative investigation at the intersection of performance and sculpture. Hollingsworth and Colquhoun are both interested in those places where the boundaries between disciplines and ideas become blurred and malleable and praxis helps to further corrode these, often arbitrary, distinctions. In this performance the two artists are adrift amongst a scattering of neon tubing with proximity oscillators attached to their chests allowing them to interact with the neon not just physically but sonically. There is more than a hint of the homo-erotic as the they crawl infinitely slowly amongst the tubing, semi-naked and bending close to and straddling the light to bring forth a sonic wail that rises and falls with their movements. The deliberately ponderous movements and the overwhelming soundscape fuse to create a mesmerising mise-en-scéne, a wordless Beckettian shadow play that begins and ends in darkness.

An Afternoon Seminar with Matthew Darbyshire, Owen Hatherly and Rupert Ackroyd.

This Saturday the Tramway are hosting, an afternoon discussion focusing on issues which arise from Matthew Darbyshire’s new commission for Tramway, ‘T Rooms’. The artist will discuss issues which arise from his commission for Tramway, alongside his collaborators on the exhibition Rupert Ackroyd, Jacob Farrell, and Owen Hatherley.
Matthew Darbyshire’s installation T Rooms is a trompe l’oeil style architectural render of a proposed development, although owing to the eerie silence of it all, Tramway’s visitors may suspect that they’ll have to make do with the virtual rendition "until the market picks up". With its computer generated geometry, pixelated curves and uniform proportions, T Rooms suggests an abject, homogenised developers vernacular in which the Mackintosh-style has reduced to a series of bland and generic motifs – is it a bar, spa, bank or boutique? Is it for eating, sleeping, praying or a meeting?

Tramway: Call for Creatives

Another fun little sounding project for Southside Creative types to get involved with at the Tramway.

Project description
The nexy Tramway Family Day explores storytelling and early years literature.
Explore reading, writing and storytelling in a day celebrating early years literature. Taking inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the event will take place across Tramway's spaces and be suitable for babies, toddlers, primary school age children and their families.
We are looking for a couple of things for next family day, and maybe people looking for experience in costume or set design can benefit from these opportunities.
  1. Set design / dressing - create a cost effective 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' table set that can be set up simply within 20 mins and is child-friendly. Uses 20 chairs and 2 trestle tables. Space approx 5m x 7m.
  2. Needs to be sturdy as will be used 3 times during the day. Nothing breakable or unsuitable 4-12 yr olds.
  3. Set design / dressing - create a comfortable child-friendly Alice in Wonderland-themed storytelling corner.Must be fire-proof, able to fit around 35-40 toddlers and parents within it and be simple to set up / clear away.
Thoughts so far include a 'chess board' made from black and white cushions sewn together, with foam chess pieces as extra cushions / or a garden space? Needs to sit on floor space approx 5m x 7m and withstand full day of use from babies and toddlers.3. 4 student actors required as storytellers on the day. They will be given 3 children's books each to learn and will need to perform them to groups of 30-40 parents and toddlers / young primary school children on rotation between 10.30am and 3pm. Need to have no fear as the audience likely to be distracted and noisy!
    Microphones optional.
  4. Costume design - We would love to have a queen of hearts and / or White Rabbit running around on the day. Anyone up for helping make this happen? Anyone up for volunteering to dress up?
  5. As ever event volunteers required the week before the event and on the day to help with decorations, making up goody bags etc.
Please see the event illustration (from Erin McGrath) as reference for the style we are using for event promotion and general decorations on the day.
Submission instructions
We are open to suggestions and getting creative!
The event will take place on Sunday 8th May 10am - 6pm.

Pecha Kucha - Current Affairs

                      Image from www.rosssinclair.co.uk
The Pecha Kucha series of events hosted by the Tramway in 2010, showcased a whole host of Artists, designers, performers and writers. We didn't make it to all the events, you have to be fast as tickets sell out quickly, but the events we went to were really interesting and a good mix of people, experience and disciplines.

If you've never been along before, Pecha Kucha is a format where speakers take the floor for just over six minutes, presenting twenty slides for twenty seconds each. Our next event will be bigger than ever, representing the broad range of creative thinkers based in Glasgow and taking place in our main theatre.

Thankfully the Tramway have a new series of Pecha Kucha nights scheduled for 2011 and the first of these takes place on the 29 January. As you would expect there is a wide range of creative thinkers at the event, ranging from environmental artist Ross Sinclair to Scottish dance artist Rosalind Masson, and actor Tam Dean Burn.

Due to the popularity of the previous events, this Pecha Kucha will be held in Tramway one which has a bigger capacity - so more chance of getting tickets

Kate Thomson Sculpture @ House for an Art Lover

There is a great little show of the fantastic sculptor Kate Thomson's work on at the House for an Art lover right now until 30 September. Her work has a beautiful simple and delicate quality and plays with light in really interesting and unusal ways. Its well worth a trip to the HAL to see the show,

About Kate
"Kate Thomson is an established Scottish sculptor who has been working internationally for the last 20 years. After graduating in Fine Art from Newcastle University, she worked for 3 years as a community artist in the Gorbals in Glasgow, where in 1989 she was also one of the six Founding Directors of the Glasgow Sculpture Studios, before starting to work on site-specific public sculptures for parks, gardens, and buildings all over the world, from inner city re-developments and prestigious new building projects, to established sites like the British Embassy in Tokyo.

Kate Thomson’s work is abstracted from the human form and landscape, exploring relationships in physical, cultural and social space. Her beautifully crafted marble pieces use form to articulate light and life, and touch on something essential yet unique in all of us."

Pecha Kucha @ The Tramway

Peer to Peer, 2008 by Craig Mulholland (c) Courtesy of Sorcha Dallas
The Tramway will be hosting it's second Pecha Kucha event, Sound & Fury, on Thursday 22 July. If you didn't make it along to the last one or have never heard of Pecha Kucha before here's an over view:

Artists and creative thinkers take the floor for just under seven minutes when they will share with us their passions, hopes and fears. Pecha Kucha Night was devised in Tokyo in 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for chitchat, it rests on a concise presentation format based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds.

Speakers this time will be Laura Aldridge, Steven Cairns, Roanne Dods, Laurie Figgis, Michelle Hannah, Craig Mulholland, Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan, Nicholas Party, Ciara Philips, Gregor Wright.

The last one was seemingly very interesting - we never made it along because we were not quick enough to get a ticket  so be quick it'll sell out fast. (this time...we've already got ours)

A La Mode Exhibition 28 May - 17 October 2010

On Sunday we decide to take a trip to Scotland Street School to see the A La Mode exhibition. In 1912 a new luxury fashion magazine was launched in paris entitled the Journal des Dames at des Modes.
Although it only existed for little more than two years it was seen as a sensation. The fashion prints were produced by some of the leading artists and illustrators of the day. The images were produced using the 'pouchoir' stenciling technique which gave the a richness and depth of colour that is still visible in the surving prints. Glasgow City Council holds 17 volumns of this rare magazine and at are exhibiting forty of the A La Mode prints until the 17 October 2010.
Along side this exhibition Scotland Street School are running several other events and courses. Including Mililinery courses (10 July) Silk Painting (26 June 2010) and Jewellery Design (17 July/21 August) . There are also a series of talks including the illustrated history of the fashion print and fashion during the Belle Epoque 1900-14.  for more events www.glasgowmuseums.com

QPCC - Open Studios, Exhibtion and Talks 22/23 May

There are so many interesting and unique places in the Southside to explore but  the Queens Park Camera Club, on Millbrae Rd in Langside, has been on my list for a long time. It's a great facility, I have to confess I have all these romantic notions of photographers working away, discussing ideas and being creative. So I was delighted  when Michael Mclean from the Camera Club, let me know of their plans for an open studio day with an exhibition and talks.
QPCC are organising their exhibition as part of the Southside Festival, alongside Art in the Park, on the weekend of the 22/23 of May. With an extra special event happening on the 23 May ...which I know about but I can't tell you sorry... I promised, maybe I'll give you a clue nearer the time.

“Queen's Park Camera Club is delighted to be part of this year's Art In The Park, which takes place right at the end of another busy year for the us. The festival gives us an opportunity to open our club rooms on Millbrae Road to the public and to exhibit our recent work, as well as a selection of prints from the club's extensive archive. This year we will also be staging 3-D slide shows at 1pm & 3pm on both the Saturday and Sunday. These will be given by our resident expert in stereoscopic photography, Denis Alyshev, who will show images from his travels in Russia, Japan and Scotland all in amazing 3-D. Over the weekend, members will be in the club rooms to give you more information on our activities and to let you know about an exciting project we are currently working on in association with Glasgow City Council.”
