The Glad Cafe at Streetland

The Glad Cafe will be at Streetland Festival again this year, but this time their event will be a little bit different. Their last two Streetlands events have been showcasing the local talent of Govanhill at the Pandora Bar. However this year, they have a varied line up highlighting the vast musical talent from different cultures based in the area from Scots/Irish traditional to Zimbabwean mbira playing to Roma music all condensed into an hour. The event is completely free and will take place in Westmoreland Street Gardens on Friday the 4th May at 6.30.

GI Festival Southside: Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us

Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us, is a series of events taking place in and around Govan as part of the Gi Festival. The public art event on 28 April, will use  obsolete technology to hurl language across Glasgow’s River Clyde. Led by artists Matt Baker & t s Beall, as part of Glasgow International Festival Visual Art 2012.

Back in the day folk were forced to communicate in the most modest of means; messages in bottles would carry sacred messages over the rocky seas, in the hope of finding the intended recipient, without falling into the wrong hands. Today, we enjoy communication at our finger tips but have technological innovations and design killed the true art of communication? On the 28^th April the River Clyde will be transformed into a mini-festival of activity, where messages will be wafted, shouted, hurled, and whispered across the water using obsolete technology including marine signal flags, string-and-cup telephones, lost languages, siege engines and more.

Precious boats encasing private tokens, made with ‘redeveloped rubbish’ from the Clyde itself, will take voyage across the river whilst trebuchets (medieval catapults) hurl bespoke, hand crafted charms carrying their own special meaning, overhead.

A whole afternoon of planned activities will be taking place on both sides of the river. So get along to the Govan Waterfront and enjoy an afternoon of choral serenades on the water, catapult launching and rekindling the lost art of communication. GI Festival Southside: The Glasgow Schools Exhibition

Scotland Street School plays host to the 'The Glasgow Schools Exhibition' a project by artist Ruth Ewan. The exhibition opens on Friday 20th April and runs until 6th May 2012.

The project maps out the city’s Proletarian, Socialist Sunday and Socialist Fellowship Schools, part of a network of alternative educational organisations that once spread across the UK, of which Glasgow was a particular centre. The schools explored a spectrum of left-wing ideologies with children and young adults, from the Marxist revolutionary zeal of Tom Anderson’s Proletarian Schools (1918 – c1939) to the Christian leaning ethics of the early Socialist Sunday Schools (1896 – 1965), which later evolved into the Socialist Fellowship (1965 – 1980).

The exhibition brings together, for the first time, archive material relating to the schools from a number of public and private collections. This is accompanied by an events programme of talks and discussion, song, performance and magic. Ewan presents a series of poster works, this artist’s pamphlet, and a new documentary, made using archival footage and first hand accounts of the movements, exploring the affect they had on the lives of those involved. The project’s chosen exhibition space, Scotland Street School Museum, purposefully brings this influential and largely hidden movement into the wider context of Glasgow’s educational history.

The project has been curated by Kitty Anderson and Siobhan Carroll in association with The Common Guild as part of Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art

GI Festival Southside: Everything Flows

For Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2012 Patricia Fleming Projects launch Everything Flows, a limited edition EP of nine tracks and artwork from the experimental art into music scene, emerging from the Glasgow visual art sector over the last fifteen years. Tracks from established visual artists including Ross Sinclair (ex The Soup Dragons) and Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon (in collaboration with Chicks on Speed) sit alongside well-known artist's bands. Timeless tracks and the voice of Sue Tompkins ensure bands like Life Without Buildings, who have not recorded together since 2002, maintain a strong underground fanbase across the globe. Almost all of the artists on the album write and perform their work solo or as part of a band, a few like Douglas Morland (Older Lover, to name just one incarnation) play in other bands across the city. Everything Flows brings together art sector favourites Muscles of Joy, Gummy Stumps, Hassle Hound and Tut Vu Vu who are popular with art and music audiences alike. Everything Flows delivers many unreleased tracks and special live performances including 'Cars' by David Sherry. Together with artwork Everything Flows is an invitation to a scene shaped by Glasgow artists who use sound and music as part of their arts practice.

"There's probably not a band in Glasgow that doesn't have at least one member who studied at Glasgow Art School" Jim Lambie (ex The Boy Hairdressers).

In collaboration with London-based arts organisation Volume, Everything Flows continues throughout the festival at the Queens Park Railway Club. Artists James Thomas and Solina Hi-Fi present a new sonic and visual installation GRAPHODER transforming the gallery into an experimental workshop and listening booth.

GI Festival: Familiar Exhibition at Southside Studios

As part of the Gi Festival, Southside Studio's presents Familiar, an exhibition of work by Erica Eyres, Michelle Hannah, Rose Ruane and Tanna Tanner.

An interdisciplinary show taking in video, photography, drawings, painting sculptural dioramas and performance. The exhibition will attempt to examine the role of witness, shared memory and collective consciousness in defining the unstable relationship between magical and mortals, where the transgressive is gifted the status of transcendence by shared belief.
