Plant Sale @ New Victoria Gardens

New Victoria Gardens is hosting its Summer plant sale this Sunday.

You may well have spotted their mysterious green door in a wall on Glenapp St, off Albert Drive, the NVG allotments are a real hidden treasure of the Southside – a green oasis in the concrete jungle.
Open to the public only a couple of times a year, this is a rare opportunity to look around this secret garden and benefit from the horticultural expertise of plot holders, with the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of plants and produce and enjoy the legendary home baking in the NVG tearoom.

The sale is on from 2-4pm and it is free to enter.

Southside Festival 2013

This weekend sees the return of the Southside Festival. This year its being complemented by the Fringe and by the Film Festival. This means we now have a pretty complete package of entertainment with the majority of the main Southside Festival appealing to families and children. Its grown from strength to strength over the last few years, though sadly no longer takes part in the actual park and instead is on the Rec grounds to the East of Queens Park.

Its usually a really popular day and nearly always brings out the sunshine and hot weather. Lets hope that trend continues tomorrow.

There is music all day (main stage listings here) and the parade from 11am (you can follow the route here.) There will also be the usual mix of fairground rides, stalls, fun and games throughout the day. Let us know your highlights and post any photos you take on our Facebook.

Southside Film Festival 2013

Its this time of the year that we get really spoiled in the Southside. Over these few months we've got the Southside Festival, Bungo in the Lanes, Streetland and the Southside Fringe to name but a few. One of our favourites of all though is the Southside Film Festival pulled together by volunteers and offering a fantastic array of brilliant movies in interesting and unusual locations.

This year the highlights include award winning edwardian whodunit Gosford Park in Pollok Park and Battleship Potemkin at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall accompanied by the Wurlitser organ. One of my favourite kids films, the Iron Giant is being shown at the Glad Cafe and its a real joy for both wee and grown up children brilliantly animated by Brad Bird who later went on to Pixar fame with movies like the Incredibles and Ratatouille.

Tickets are available online www.tickets-scotland.com and in person only at Young’s Interesting Books, Skirving St and The Glad Cafe (for Glad Cafe screenings). Cash sales only for in-person purchases. Please check individual listings for ticket info as some events require pre-booking. Pick up a programme for full details. Please email southsidefilmfest@gmail.com for any access needs.

View the programme online at: http://issuu.com/southsidefilmfestival/docs/sff_programme_2013
The festival is also open to any volunteers, so please get in touch via email southsidefilmfest@gmail.com or come meet us at our upcoming film screenings.

Southside Fringe 10 -26 May 2013

For the last few years the Southside has held an annual Festival day in Queens Park in May, alongside a wee selection of smaller sister events. This has proved really popular with families but a group of artists/ musicians and writers felt that the wider and more diverse creative community of the Southside wasn't being tapped into and so this year they have teamed together to create the Southside Fringe.

This is a huge selection of different art and music events happening all around the Queens Park area (and wider abroad). It all looks great and includes walking tours, magic nights, book launches, film events, burlesque, circus performances, comedy and plays like Steaming about a group of woman coming together in Govanhill baths old steam room seeking a safe haven.

For the full round up check on southsidefringe.org.uk. It all kicks off this Friday coming so start planning, we're all in for a busy next few weeks. We'll post about some highlights over the next few days.

Outwork @ The Tramway

Glasgow based Stephen Sutcliffe (1968, Harrogate) creates film collages generated from his extensive archive of British television, film sound, broadcast images and spoken word recordings, developed over the last 25 years. Often reflecting on aspects of British culture and identity, the results are melancholic, poetic and satirical amalgams which subtly tease out and critique ideas of class-consciousness and cultural authority. In this, his most ambitious exhibition to date, Sutcliffe will exhibit his recent film Outwork, reconfigured as an installation for multiple screens. The film was originally commissioned for the Margaret Tait Award, 2013.

Outwork is inspired by Erving Goffman’s book Frame Analysis which explores how interpretations shift dramatically within different framing contexts. Sutcliffe employs this premise structurally, with a series of images and animations which explore the determining influence of titles, prefaces and introductions on images. For Tramway’s main gallery, Outwork will be re-presented as a filmic collage across three screens, including new animated sequences and excerpts from previous work.

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
