Southside Fringe 10 -26 May 2013

For the last few years the Southside has held an annual Festival day in Queens Park in May, alongside a wee selection of smaller sister events. This has proved really popular with families but a group of artists/ musicians and writers felt that the wider and more diverse creative community of the Southside wasn't being tapped into and so this year they have teamed together to create the Southside Fringe.

This is a huge selection of different art and music events happening all around the Queens Park area (and wider abroad). It all looks great and includes walking tours, magic nights, book launches, film events, burlesque, circus performances, comedy and plays like Steaming about a group of woman coming together in Govanhill baths old steam room seeking a safe haven.

For the full round up check on southsidefringe.org.uk. It all kicks off this Friday coming so start planning, we're all in for a busy next few weeks. We'll post about some highlights over the next few days.

QPCC - Open Studios, Exhibtion and Talks 22/23 May

There are so many interesting and unique places in the Southside to explore but  the Queens Park Camera Club, on Millbrae Rd in Langside, has been on my list for a long time. It's a great facility, I have to confess I have all these romantic notions of photographers working away, discussing ideas and being creative. So I was delighted  when Michael Mclean from the Camera Club, let me know of their plans for an open studio day with an exhibition and talks.
QPCC are organising their exhibition as part of the Southside Festival, alongside Art in the Park, on the weekend of the 22/23 of May. With an extra special event happening on the 23 May ...which I know about but I can't tell you sorry... I promised, maybe I'll give you a clue nearer the time.

“Queen's Park Camera Club is delighted to be part of this year's Art In The Park, which takes place right at the end of another busy year for the us. The festival gives us an opportunity to open our club rooms on Millbrae Road to the public and to exhibit our recent work, as well as a selection of prints from the club's extensive archive. This year we will also be staging 3-D slide shows at 1pm & 3pm on both the Saturday and Sunday. These will be given by our resident expert in stereoscopic photography, Denis Alyshev, who will show images from his travels in Russia, Japan and Scotland all in amazing 3-D. Over the weekend, members will be in the club rooms to give you more information on our activities and to let you know about an exciting project we are currently working on in association with Glasgow City Council.”

Albert Drive Open Studios and Exhibition

On the 16th of May, Albert Drive Studios are throwing open their doors and inviting you in to have a look through the studios, chat to the artists, browse the exhibition of work and view the new installation piece, situated in their garden.
We were fortunate a few months back to meet Hilary, who set up and runs the studios and had a tour of the studios and garden. This is a fantastic opportunity to have a look around these studios and talk to some really interesting artists and designers; like the textile artists, Mouse and Bean  and Sans Facon. The studios are open from 11am - 4pm and it's free

We will have a public art piece from artists 'Sans Farcons', which will be out in the garden. We also have work by 'Mouse and Bean', textile designers. Jewellery by Nicola Green. And Patricia Berry, who is a Milliner. Also an Installation piece ' Bodego Bay', from Hilary Nicoll and Mickey O'Connor.

Most areas of the House will be open for visitors to wander around.

There is also going to be a Vintage Clothes Sale from Zoe and Shantha. If its a nice day, we will have the clothes sale in the garden, but if its raining, then that will be up in the Attic space with Homemade Lemonade and Cookies.

Mini Film Festival at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall

As part of this years Southside Festival, Pollokshaws Burgh Hall  and the Scottish Cinema Organ Trust will be hosting a mini film festival, during the month of May. The festival opens on the 2nd of May with the silent movie Hunch back of Notre Dame, accompanied by the SCOT Wurlitzer cinema organ.  Last years silent film, The General, was a sell out and it was a really unique experience watching the film along with the cinema organ, it's a very different sound to the church organ. Tickets are £5 and the film starts at 2.45pm
Also showing as part of the festival is a series of David Lean films.
9 May - Brief encounter, the 1945 film about a woman who meets a man in a railway station and is tempted to cheat on her husband
23 May - Great Expectations, the oscar winning film about a humble orphan suddenly becomes a gentleman with the help of an unknown benefactor.
6 June - Doctor ZhiVago, the 1965 film about the life of a Russian doctor/poet who, although married, falls for a political activist's wife and experiences hardships during the Bolshevik Revolution.

Tickets for the David Lean Films are £4 or a trilogy ticket is £10. Tickets can be booked by calling Pollokshaws Burgh Hall 0141 632 5811

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
