Stargazing for Dummies @ Merry-go-round

We once took the Stargazing Course at the Glasgow Science Centre which was run by Steve and it was brilliant. He's a great speaker so I think this talk would be well worth catching. With the nights getting darker earlier and earlier there is more chance of getting out and getting a clear night to see all the constellations hanging in the sky.

"Stargazing for Mummies" talk is on Thursday 10 October at 8pm - 9:30pm in Merry-Go-Round Glasgow. Tickets are free and include a drink and some nibbles.

Midsummer Tea Party @ Nomad RDC

The Talented design chieftains for Nomad (See previous Creative Thursday Interview) are holding a Tea Party to raise money for Marie Curie and we are all invited. See below.

"Marie Curie Cancer Care has always been an extraordinary charity which has touched the lives of some of our team and their loved ones. As a result we wanted to do something to help them to raise money and could not resist when we spotted their ‘Blooming Great Tea Party’ concept.

At Nomad we have a bit of a tradition of holding events in and around midsummer and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. The Tea Party will take place in our studio on Friday the 28th of June between 10:00am and 16:00pm and we would like to invite everyone and anyone to drop in whenever they can on this day. We will be selling cups of tea and baked goods made by our team and anyone else we can persuade to help! We are also hoping to have a number of surprise events/competitions on the day, including bespoke Nomad designs and raffle that is already shaping up with some pretty impressive prizes. We want to raise a modest minimum £250 for the charity so will be pulling out all the stops.

Bungofest - 8 October 2011

Another little reminder about the brilliant sounding inaugural Bungofest organised by The Strathbungo Society and The Arches. In and around various Strathbungo locations there will be a host of free spoken word, poetry, theatre, kids workshop and music events. The full list is below and you'll see quite a few are roving the area. The idea is for you to drop into one of the local bars/ cafes and get some free entertainment at the same time.

Lots of great people are involved with local author (and recent Creative Thursday interviewee) Alan Bissett reading scenes from his novels, the amazing Eilidh MacAskill leading her Arches choir in full song and the evening topped off with performances from comedian Bratchy and performer Kieran Hurley. There is even an art exhibition by one half of Southside Happenings on display in Cookie.

As we've said before Bungo in the back Lanes is one of our favourite events in the Southside calender so we've got high hopes that this becomes a regular sister event. There are a lot of great little venues in the area and from our creative Thursday interviews we know the area has its fair share of artists and musicians. Get along and check it out and let us know what you thought.

Bungo in the Back Lanes - 18th June 2011

It's almost time for one of our favourite southside events of the year...Bungo in the Back Lanes. Bungo is the summer festival organised by the residents of Strathbungo. One Saturday every year they open up their gardens and clear out their garages. Stalls are set up in the back lanes, bouncy castles in the gardens, live music, wonderful food and most of all a great atmosphere.

It's a unique festival in a great area of the city, it's the community spirit and independent nature of the event that makes it stand out. This years event will be held on Saturday the 18th June and starts at 1pm.

Burns Suppers and Ceilidh's

On the 25th January there will be Burns suppers, and poetry reciting throughout the world. I think Ayrshire maybe just outside our Southside boundary, however there are several Burns events going on in the Southside, you can probably even go to more than one, most are around the 25th of January.

The Glasgow IVC will be holding a Burns Supper in St. Ninian's Church Hall, on Saturday 22nd January at 19.00 - 01.00. Tickets cost £25 and includes your Meal (Soup, Haggis Neeps and Tattie followed by Apple Pie), piper, a glass of wine, soft drinks & ceilidh. Langside College will be holding a Burns Supper and Ceilidh in their new college theatre and bar, from 7.30pm till late. Tickets are £8/£5  telephone 0141 272 3771

We've already posted about the now legendary Govanhill Bath Trust's Burns Nicht Ceilidh, taking place on the 29 January at Langside Halls. Tickets will be available from the GBCT office, 126 Calder Street, Govanhill or e-mail info@govanhillbaths.com They've kept ticket prices at the same rate as last year, £10 and £8 conc (including a haggis dinner), and have booked the 'Cosmic Ceilidh Band' for the event!

The House for an Art Lover will host their traditional Burns Supper night on the 29 January. Guests will be welcomed by the enchanting sounds of a piper as they enjoy a glass of sparkling wine in the stunning surroundings of the Music Room before proceeding to the Main Hall and Dining Room, where they will be served Burns’ inspired fare with a twist including the traditional neeps, tatties and of course the renowned guest of honour, the haggis. Following the hearty address to the haggis and delightful dinner, guests will be further entertained by popular Burns’ poetry including the perennial Tam O’Shanter as well as a selection of lively songs. Bungo in the Lanes - 2008

I went to 'Bungo in the Lanes' for the first time last year and had a great day. This year the residents of strathbungo will host 'Bungo' on the 24th of June [1PM - 4PM]. Bungo in the Lanes will now form part of the Southside festival being held throughout the month of June.

Last year we enjoyed organic burgers, pakora from shimla pinks and some delicious strawberry/cream scones. We also bought a couple of used books, some honey and some conkers.
