Southside Festival 2012 weekend

SOUTHSIDE FESTIVAL
The Southside Festival have just released information on the 2012 Festival which is taking place this coming weekend. Lots of events on in the recreation grounds for a family day out with music and comedy elsewhere too, here's what they have to say about it all.

"The big day this year is on the 26th of May and and will be followed on the 27th with "Picnic in the park".

Festivities will kick of on the 26th at 11am with the procession leaving from Newlandsfield Road and for the first time passes through Shawlands before making its way down Pollokshaws road to Alison Street and then right onto Victoria Road and entering the Recreation Grounds from the Queens Drive entrance. From this point on the main stage bursts into life with tunes from the St Francis Pipe Band followed by a full ten hours of music from up and coming Scottish Bands who regularly perform at the Mod as well as indie clubs throughout Glasgow.
For Picnic in the Park, the Southside Festival managed to secure an extensive line up of local bands form secondary schools from all over the Southside as a way of providing a platform where they can gain experience of playing in a large event and the opportunity to share their tunes."

You can read the whole programme of events here.

Sherlock @ Southside Film Festival

On Saturday evening there will be a full night of Sherlock Holmes organised by the 'Sherlock Holmes Society of Scotland' (who are Southsiders). It's a really good line up and with the recent movies and tv series, here's great chance to see three further alternate presentations of the consulting detective.

Part one will screen Reichenbach Falls including an introduction and Q&A with writer James Mavor and actor Alec Newman. Followed by two Sherlock Silents, The Mystery of Leaping Fish and Sherlock Jr

Runs from 7pm - 10pm at The Shed on Langside Avenue and shaping up to be a pretty good evening of entertainment for just £6.

"Reichenbach Falls is an action-packed psychological thriller examining the complex relationship between character and creator. DI Jim Buchan is a cop on the edge, Jack Harvey is a successful crime writer with the world at his feet. In Reichenbach Falls, these two former friends are thrown together when a 100-year-old body is discovered beneath the streets of Edinburgh.

The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (25mins) stars Douglas Fairbanks as Coke Ennyday, a scientific detective, loosely based on Holmes, who discovers a contraband of opium (which he eagerly tastes) transported with “Leaping Fishes”... You get the idea, this is a bizarre viewing experience and not what you normally expect from Douglas Fairbanks!

Sherlock Junior (45mins), written, directed, produced and starring Buster Keaton as a love struck detective/projectionist, is not to be missed! This version of this silent comedy classic has a jazzy score from Carl Davis."

Class Struggle: Film from the Clyde: Saturday 19th May

As part of the Southside Festival, The Pearce Institute in Govan will be screening the Class Struggle: Film from the Clyde, which records the dramatic events of the UCS work-in of 1971-2 inside the shipyards. Film collective, Cinema Action, were the only film crew allowed access to the shipyards by the Shop Stewards’ Committee during the work-in. It was one of the most exciting and powerful struggles against unemployment in Britain.

The shipyard work-in - organised by Jimmy Reid, Jimmy Airlie, Sammy Barr and Sammy Gilmore - was an alternative to a strike. It came after the new Conservative government insisted that shipbuilding should not rely on government subsidies, and refused to hand over more money to keep the UCS yards open. The decision meant at least 6,000 of the 8,500 shipyard workers employed by UCS would have to be made redundant.

The work-in saw workers manage and operate the UCS shipyards until the government changed its policy. It was intended to prove that the yards were viable. The UK government, led by Ted Heath, finally relented in February 1972 and announced a £35m injection of cash into the yards.

Film Screening Saturday 19th May: 3pm - 5pm: Tickets Free (But Donation Welcome)

The Great Disappointment of Santa Muerta

The Great Disappointment of Santa Muerta is a one woman show ‘work-in-progress’ by Amanda Monfrooe. Part of NTS Reveal.
Just when she was about to throw in the towel Amanda was handed the role of a lifetime. She was hired to play the patron saint of death, live on Mexican Public Television for Dia De Los Muertos, the Latin American celebration death and the dead. Amanda was more surprised than anybody as she wasn’t aware she even spoke Spanish till someone asked. She also didn’t know that she was, actually, Santa Muerta.

Southside Film Festival: Neds - 18th May 2012

The opening film of this years Southside Film Festival is Neds, Southside Glasgow’s most prolific and talented filmmaker, Peter Mullan, recreates 1970s Glasgow for his most recent feature film NEDS (124 mins). The film tells the story of Catholic teenager John McGill, played by Conor McCarron in his first ever acting role. Despite showing promise John becomes involved in ‘NED’ culture and has to deal, and live with, the consequences. NEDS won Best Film at the San Sebastian Film Festival and was released last year to positive acclaim from critics and audiences alike. For those of you who missed it, come along, for those of you who saw it, come along to watch it again. And as NEDS was mostly shot in the Southside, it's the perfect opening film for Southside Film Festival!

Get ready for the art

This weekend is a great chance to see some art with the Glasgow International drawing to a close and the annual Streetland festival kicking off. Here's a little guide to the Southside Art Scene this weekend. Spread the word to your art loving geographically challenge friends over the river and get them to come see some culture.

GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL 2012
Main event 4th/ 5th May times vary
The biennial Contemporary Arts Festival which is really starting to make a name for itself. A host of art is happening throughout Glasgow but lots of it is in the Southside or involves Southside Artists stepping over the river ie our very own HIMP, one half of Southside Happenings, who has an exhibition on At The Arches (*).

STREETLAND
Main event 4th/ 5th May times vary
Govanhill's very own festival of creativity, community & the street, Streetland returns for a third year, with a packed programme with a little something for everyone.  Its a kind of art exhibition meets performance meets community day extravaganza and it aims to "liven up the streets and back lanes of Govanhill while striving to celebrate the many diverse cultures that exist in the area and make up the community as a whole."
The last two years have been a lot of fun and they have always made the sunshine so fingers crossed for tomorrow. This year the festival's themes are focused on the universal appeal of music, food & cinema. There will be an opening event at Westmoreland St Gardens (Fri 6:30pm) in conjunction with the fabulous Glad Café, a Baby Disco party and a grand finale cinema event, Govanhillywood!
You can download the full programme here Streetland programme 2012

THE CHALET
Streetland - Opening event 4may 7pm/ prize giving 5 May 5pm
Celebrating excellence in fine art, The Chalet, a premier Govanhill contemporary art space, hosts this year's juried competition known for high-quality, poignant, yet vastly eclectic works from local and international artists.
See more info here The Chalet Prize 2012

SOUTHSIDE STUDIOSStreetland/ GI2012 - 5th May 11am-6pm / 8pm - 12pmThe south side studio is also getting involved and will have a naming ceremony for their new art gallery. I vote they call it Steve. They also have a workshop called Animate: Dance an exhibition called Familiar which is part of the GI2012 and a temporary installation/structure which is "placed at the heart of an urban block in response to its immediate context, and the pattern of tenements that define the streets, movement, and the character of Govanhill. The new structure invites people to explore the shared external space of the South Side Studio. Clad in stretch wrap the surfaces reflect light, changing in response to the weather and time of day, and at night the object glows revealing the structure within. The project was inspired by the aims of the Streetland festival ‘to engage and inspire the community in a creative exploration of streets and communal spaces."

TRAMWAY
GI2012 - Majority end on Sunday 6 May/ Monday 7 MayThe Tramway  is one of our favourite venues in the City and it has four different events on during the GI2012 festival. One "The Making of Us' is a collaboration in which a film was performed and recorded within a series of installation/ sets with the audience viewing the performance becoming 'extras' in the background. The resulting raw footage can be viewed on loop in the remains of the installation/ sets and an edited version will appear later as a film.

The other works on display and an installation/ dance "Black Forest" by Kelly Nipper and sets of films by Moyra Favey and Redmond Entwistle. I found the "Making of Us" to be the most interesting piece.

EVERYTHING FLOWSGI2012 - 5/6 May 2:30 - 6pm Quenns Park Train StationPatricia Fleming Projects launch Everything Flows, a limited edition EP bringing together a selection of tracks and artwork from the experimental art into music scene emerging from the Glasgow visual art sector over the last twenty years. There is an accompanying exhibition at the artist-run Queen’s Park Railway Club where artists James Thomas and Solina Hi-Fi present a new installation transforming the space into an experimental workshop and listening booth.

THE GLASGOW SCHOOLS
GI2012 - Sat 6th May, 2pm-4pm, Scotland Street School Museum

The Glasgow Schools is a project by artist Ruth Ewan. It maps out the city’s Proletarian, Socialist Sunday and Socialist Fellowship Schools, part of a network of alternative educational organisations that once spread across the UK, of which Glasgow was a particular centre. The schools explored a spectrum of left-wing ideologies with children and young adults.
The exhibition brings together, for the first time, archive material relating to the schools from a number of public and private collections. This is accompanied by an events programme of talks and discussion, song, performance and magic. Ewan presents a series of poster works, pamphlet, and a new documentary, made using archival footage and first hand accounts of the movements, exploring the affect they had on the lives of those involved. The project’s chosen exhibition space, Scotland Street School Museum, purposefully brings this influential and largely hidden movement into the wider context of Glasgow’s educational history.

I AM THE ARCHITECT, THIS IS NOT HAPPENING, THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE

THE UNIVERSE IS VERY BIG, YOU ARE VERY SMALL, ACT ACCORDINGLYGI2012 - The Arches, 253 Argyle Street, Glasgow / 02 April - 31 May 2012 (Noon - 11pm)
Taking direction from the GI's programme "Real Time" Hole in my Pocket explore the experience of time from a macro/micro view point. Trying to understand the concept of "the moment"/ "the present" when viewed against the enormous background history of the Universe.
Taking the theories of Hugh Everett III the duo explore ideas of multi-verses, alternate realities and the pressure and resulting action of Choice.
"An exhibition of astro-geek-brilliance, a splendid meeting of Science and Art for all budding Brian Coxs or Stephen Hawkins'."

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
