"For her exhibition at Tramway, Rachel Adams has created an installation of new sculptural works that extends her exploration of the relationship between science fiction, classical sculptural motifs and decorative craft techniques.

Adams joins the aesthetics of sci-fi with an awareness of how certain materials and forms have a specific cultural identity and place within time, particularly craft techniques such as tie dye, macramé and crochet.

The methods employed by TV programmes of the 1970s to produce an “alien” environment are presented as symptomatic of a larger cultural shift, one marked by a growing distrust of the ceaseless progression of technological advancements that defined the preceding decade."

Room Service @ Pollok House

This looks quite interesting.

James Rigler produces objects that respond to the built environment around us. Working predominantly in ceramics, the language he uses speaks about the space his work occupies. He is preoccupied with forms, colour-ways and patterns from the canon of architectural history and interiors. At Pollok House Rigler will respond to the grandeur and formality of the house in its heyday. Through out the main house, gardens, and servants’ quarters  Riglers’ interventions create new narratives and offer an alternative interpretation of the house and its contents, encouraging visitors to look again at the many features and details throughout the house and gardens that make Pollok House such a gem.

The China Closet in the servants' quarters will be re-tiled with a graphic motif reminiscent of 1950’s Capri as Georgian Scotland, adding colour to a place that has been reserved for the pragmatic and utilitarian.

The Gazebo adjoining the formal garden and front lawn will have a frieze added, echoing the house exterior’s detailing of wildlife and natural fauna, repositioning and restyling the manner in which architectural features magnify the incidental in the world they inhabit.

A pair of objects in the Main Hallway reference a bird cage or a lantern and pay homage to the unusual ceiling rose – a flying eagle grasping a pendant light – and nod to the hand-painted wallpaper upstairs, as well as the feathers that adorn the stucco and exterior walls.

Coax Me @ The Chalet

The always interesting Chalet has a new exhibition opening tonight (2nd November) at 7pm and then running until 13 November open Thurs-Sun 10-5pm.

"Glasgow's premier Govanhill venue presents an exhibition of enticing works from local and international artists. Works are chosen for their inherent draw on a viewer, and the fulfilled promise of finding greater meaning through engaged viewing. While maintaining depth, each work is accessible and refrains from obtuse references, secret language, and empty symbolism. Streetlands - Project Proposal Deadline Approaching

The Govanhill Baths Community Trust have started 2011 in top gear, with their famous Burns Nicht Celidh on the 29 January, the opening of their new Emporium on the 22 January and  a call for Artist's for their exhibition and silent auction in March.

Streetland, Govanhill's Art Festival, are currently seeking proposals for projects for this years Streetlands. The event was great last year - so if you've got a great idea, get it submitted soon.

The Baths Auction is looking for Art Work

The Baths Auction is seeking a number of works for a three day charity event taking place inside the historic Govanhill Baths from March 17th - 19th, 2011. Proceeds of the auction will support the Govanhill Baths Community Trust and its campaign to restore the building to public use. Artists will have the option of a full (100% of proceeds to charity) or partial (50% to charity 50% back to artist) donation of their works.

Auction Format

The auction will take place in two parts: first, a three day exhibition and silent auction, and secondly, a live auction on the evening of the 19th. All accepted works will be for sale in the silent auction with a starting bid of £20. All following bids must be made in £10 increments or more. Fully donated works (100% to charity) will be marked as such at the exhibition. A selection of the most sought after works from the silent auction will move on to the live auction to be sold alongside works from invited well-established artists.

Eligibility

In accordance with the Govanhill Baths Community Trust's primary aims of benefiting the local area, one third of exhibited work at the Bath's auction will be selected from applicants within the Govanhill community. The remaining two thirds are open to all artists working in any auctionable media. All accepted work must be delivered to the Govanhill Baths Community Trust office by March 1st and be ready to display upon delivery.

How to apply

All applications must be submitted via e-mail to artatbaths@gmail.com and must include the following:

- your name and contact information. Please also include a note as to whether you are a member of the Govanhill community or not. If so, please briefly tell us in what way.

- images (.jpgs under 1MB each) of up to 5 works.

- title of work(s), media, dimensions, year, file name of

corresponding image, and whether you wish to fully donate the piece or make a partial donation.

- (optional) maximum 250 word c.v. or bio.

Common Thread @ Southside Studios

Common Thread is an event showcasing the work and facilities of multi-discipline designers working in the south side of Glasgow. A wide range of work will be exhibited including interior, furniture, product, web, graphic and sound design.There will be a chance to view the facilities (including the sound and web design studios and workshop) and chat with the designers.

There will also be light and sound installations and Southside Studios own radio station will be playing throughout the evening. Get down early for some of our famous pizza baked in our own oven!

Another really fun little thing happening on in the Southside this month. There just is nowhere near enough time to visit everything.
Looks really a really good show - a photo journey around Scottish small town ironmongers. Sounds like the project comes from a similar idea to one we've been trying to put together to record all the old family run shops in the Southside. A celebration of a changing and simpler way of life. Not been to see the exhibition yet but from the few photos we've seen and from looking through Helene's website looks like she has captured the magic and mystery these old shops hold.

"Helene Witcher’s photographs celebrate traditional ironmongers shops across Scottish towns and villages. Although images like an old paraffin pump will prompt nostalgia, Helene recognises the shops’ contemporary importance. ‘Ironmongers’ practical knowledge and advice are an essential antidote to our throw away consumer culture.’ She says, ‘They help people learn, or relearn basic skills and to solve problems.’ ‘And the range of colours, textures, shapes and smells in traditional ironmongers shops means that shopping for something ordinary or practical takes place within a gentle assault on the senses.’

The photographs capture the pride and depth of knowledge of the individuals working behind the counter and show the colourful complexity of their stock. Many show shops that have been in the same family for generations, their busy interiors characterised by floor to ceiling shelving crammed with items with handwritten labels. They reveal, too, the satisfaction of customers from a girl with a goldfish to the woman who bought a lavatory brush to keep a cormorant from roosting on her mast.
Helene celebrates the shops’ capacity to ‘blend past and present, progress and sustainability, respect for what can be mended and pragmatism about what needs to be replaced. All wrapped up with kindliness and skill’. "
The exhibition is at Albert Drive Studios, 334 Albert Drive, Pollockshields, Glasgow and will be open from 10.00am – 4.00pm every Saturday and Sunday throughout August 2010.

The first rule about Poster Club

On Sunday just prior to the World Cup Final why not take a wander along to Albert Avenue where an exhibition of posters will be taking place in someone's flat.

The Poster Club are a group of like minded printers who meet once a week at the Glasgow Print Studio to create a whole range of different posters. In March 2010 they recieved funding from Central Station to get themselves set up properly and to put together the series of work which will be shown in this exhibition.

South East Glasgow Arts Network - First projects

Last week we attended an interesting meeting of the SE Glasgow's Art's Network, to hear presentations about the first three projects that the network has funded since it was formed in August 2009. The three projects were; The Hidden Garden's Cultural Cookery Book, The Streetland Festival and a project by three performance artists entitled Hidden Spaces (pictured above). The three projects were very different, one an ongoing project engaging women of different cultures and backgrounds in discussions about food, one the first step towards a festival celebrating the Street and the last a "presentation of "Hidden Spaces" and the environments will be coloured with installation and populated by some *characters* ;) We are using this as a spring board to develop a more comprehensive street performance/installation plan for the area."  I must admit I'm still not entirely sure what the Hidden Spaces performances will contain. Anyone who is in these two Pollokshields areas on Wed or Fri between 3pm and 6pm please let us know what you find. On Wed 24th there will also be a projection of images and films "onto the gable end of houses where the park is at Forth/Leslie Sts. (Turtle Park) at six pm."

A La Carte

As part of the ongoing improvement works at Central Station the Arches has temporarily closed throughout January and February. Not wanting to be completely absent through this time, the Arches is supporting temporary events in other spaces around the city.

One of these events, happening in Pollokshields sounds fun but very odd.

"A La Carte is a dinner party with a difference. An interactive performance about the art of dining, it is inspired by evenings around the table with friends, family and strangers. Molly Taylor invites you to come dine with her, and explore what we talk about around the dinner table.

Ticket price includes a three-course vegetarian meal, and guests are free to bring their own bottle. Audience members will be told the full address on buying a ticket."

She's a brave lady inviting a bunch of strangers to her home, not that anyone will be a secret serial killer, but thy might be a serial bore.

It seems to be an extension of a mini-fad that started in London last year for pop up restaurants. People advertising and opening up their homes to strangers each week as small restaurants. As the author finds out in this article in the Independent, the lure of the pop up restaurant is that "It's a little bit Come Dine With Me, a little bit MasterChef and a little bit Through The Keyhole. "

Streetland - Call for Proposals

For the first weekend in May 2010, Westmoreland Street in Govanhill and surrounding key spaces will play host to a programme of exhibitions, performances and events.

The programme will open on the evening of Friday 30 April and continue on Saturday 1 to Sunday 2 May 2010. Initiated by the Govanhill Baths Trust, Southside Studios and Govanhill residents, the steering group invite proposals for a range of activities that explore the theme of the street and its use as a conduit, meeting place, home and garden.

Proposals might include submissions for temporary artworks, performances, screenings, talks or events, for example. All media are welcome. The programme will use both indoor and outdoor spaces. There are a range of different spaces along Westmoreland St and the surrounding streets and proposals can also suggest venues. Spaces could include the community garden on Westmoreland St, closes and backcourts, the Centre for Community Practice, 126 Calder St, exterior of the Govanhill Baths building and Peace Garden, for example.

We are especially keen to hear from residents with closes and backcourts to offer. (Please note: Southside Studios and the Govanhill Baths Art and Regeneration Team already have projects planned that will contribute to the event). Participants are expected to work with the Streetland team to negotiate access to spaces, work out access to power for events, and assume responsibility for invigilation etc. Please see submission requirements below.

There is no budget for production, however where possible the team will assist with installation and sourcing of equipment (particularly where required by a few projects/events). They will also organise the marketing, publicity and interpretation materials. Applicants are encouraged to visit Westmoreland St and surrounds.

Members of the steering group will be available to talk through ideas on Saturday 20th February 11am-1pm at the Centre for Community Practice, 126 Calder St. We anticipate that Streetland will offer a dynamic weekend of creative reflections on space and community and we look forward to receiving your ideas. Gorbals Highlights

Saw this and thought people might find it interesting. Here's what the creator has to say about it.

"This is a project I organised in 2004 in one of the derelict high rise buildings in the Gorbals, where I used to live.The aim was to celebrate the relatively short life of the building before it disappeared forever. I feel that it is wrong that these buildings are demolished without a trace, like so many of the homes that have been part of Gorbals' heritage. The lamps in each room were connected to a computer which I programmed to generate the animations, some of them designed by local children who lived in the tower blocks.I am organising a similar project, but bigger and better, multicoloured and interactive.
