Stellar Sounds

Just heard that there are a series of great events happening at the Science Centre this weekend.

First up are two music events:
Remember Remember and Miaox Miaoux are playing a gig on Saturday the 8 October at 7:45pm
{EDIT - Just found out the Saturday night is sold out :( }
Meursault and Happy Particles are playing a gig on Sunday the 9 October also at 7:45pm.

Once upon a time I organised for the wonderful Eilidh MacAskill to put on a little performance to a packed planetarium crowd as part of her year long project Eilidh's Ukuele Ceilidh and it sound amazing. The planetarium is a great place, its got big comfy laid back seats, its nice and cosy and they put the lights off and let you see the stars drifting by. THe acoustics in the dome are also brilliant so I'm imagining the two gig's will be great.

Tickets are only £6 per person (+ £1 booking fee) Call 0141 420 5000 to book or drop in and speak to one of their sales staff. Doors open at 7.45pm, event starts at 8pm.

WARNING "Due to the starry nature of the gig we are unable to allow latecomers in after 8.00pm (they will be allowed access to the planetarium during the break at approx 8.45pm). "

And if the two gigs were not enough there are also more lectures in "The Insight Series" where experts in Science give talks about interesting aspects of space and astronomy.

The lectures this weekend are:
October 2011
Saturday 8th October - 11am
Supermassive Black Holes: Einstein's Cosmic Monsters
Prof Martin Hendry
Black holes are probably the weirdest things in the Universe: regions of spacetime where gravity is so strong that time appears to stand still and even light itself cannot escape from their clutches. Astronomers believe that a supermassive black hole - many millions of times more massive than a normal star - can be found in the centre of galaxies. Studying them can tell us a great deal about the evolution of the Universe and even about gravity itself. Come along and hear the latest about the cosmic monsters lurking at the heart of every galaxy.

FREE with Science Mall entry- collect your ticket at the sales desk!

Saturday 8th October - 3pm-5pm
Stem Cells: A Vision of the Future
Free Film screening + Q&A film director Amy Hardie and stem cell scientist Dr Clare Blackburn
To reserve a place you must register here: http://vof-glasgow.eventbrite.com/
Bookings for this event cannot be made through Glasgow Science Centre. This event is free but there is no access to Glasgow Science Centre exhibitions.
For more information about the film, visit: http://www.stemcellsvision.co.uk/

Sunday 9th October - 11am
Ask the Astronomer Royal
Prof John Brown
Bring along your questions about ANYthing to do with space, astronomy, the universe. From how do stars work to whether astronomy is worth the money - and Professor John Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland, will try to answer them and to encourage participation in the discussion.

FREE with Science Mall entry- collect your ticket at the sales desk!

Listen In - Lights Out

The Southside Seeds will be having their fourth Listen In - Lights Out event, this Saturday night at the Go Slow Cafe on Victoria Road. There's a great line up with:
Dean Queasy - are a local band that have been gigging in the Glasgow area since 2008. Drawing from influences as wide as Nick Drake and Lou Reed they mix up genres to create a light hearted take on a serious world.
Peter Nicholson - As a founder member of the Age of Wire and String and as cellist with the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, Peter has performed and collaborated extensively with both Scottish and International musicians. Work in this area lead to his joining the One Ensemble in 2003. Combining a classical training with his experience as an improviser, Peter has had the opportunity to work closely with composers and with musicians from diverse cultures, including a project with Ravi Shankar.
Jim McAteer - You may think he's mad, but he'll just be glad - for your company! Recent gigs include support slots for a dazzling list of folk legends - Martin Carthy, Wiz Jones, Davey Graham, Robin Williamson and John Renbourn, as well as appearing in his own right at international venues from New York to Iran.
Kirstie Penman, A South Seeds gardener will be returning with some more sea shantys and tales of misfotune which are sure to cheer up even the most disheartened. As always the Go Slow Cafe will have tasty food and drinks on offer so come along and make an evening of it. Streetland Meetland

Last night we went along to the Streetland Meetland event, at the Chalet in Govanhill. It's always a treat to get inside the Chalet building it's such an interesting place. If you've never been make sure you get along to the Streetland festival. Anyway there was a great selection of local DJ'S and Bands playing throughout the night and the Streetland Meetland Quiz.
The quiz masters Neil and Tom hosted a pretty difficult quiz, we were thankful the very lovely Bill and Mary Anne were in our team. Overall we came third and won an assorted music cd from 1995 and a half dozen sausages. We have to confess to getting the question relating to Southside Happenings wrong!
We had a great time and if last nights anything to go by then this years Streetland event is going to be fantastic, so make sure you keep the 29/30th April free.

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
