This Weekend: 15/16 December

Boy its a busy one this weekend with a lot to get through. With the big Xmas day just over a week away, I'm sure everyone is frantically searching for the perfect gifts. Well follow our suggestions below and you might find yourself some really unique items without having to leave the Southside bubble!!
Now there is so much on, that not everything is do-able but how about this run down suggestion of what you could do each hour. (Follow the links for more info and see out Southside Seller's list for local artists selling interesting Christmas gifts.)

SATURDAY 15 December
8am/9am - Breakfast
Get up early and go somewhere for a tasty and hearty cooked breakfast (you are going to need it). We suggest starting in the Shawlands today. Suggestions for places to go for food are Eat Cafe or Biscuit Cafe. Eat Cafe's Stornaway stack is delicious and Biscuit do an excellent hot chocolate.
10am - Gift Shopping
After your feed why not wander to some of the Shawlands' brilliant gift shops like Paper plane, Butterfly Kisses, Nuala Ash or Pierrot and Coco. The perfect way to work off some of that breakfast is to take a walk down the other side of Queens Park and visit Pink Wafer, Eden gifts and the new Whitespace Kids which looks excellent but we've not had a chance to visit yet. On your way you can stick your head into the Shed and see their Christmas Market.
11pm - Farmer Market
Now back through the park to the last Farmer's Market of the year at the entrance off Victoria Road to fill up on all the ingredients you'll need for Christmas day.
12pm - Maxwell Park
After a quick visit to Marie Brown at Home, next up is a visit to the pop up exhibition and art sale in Maxwell Park station to see what work they have on display. (Maxwell Park Exhibition open 12pm-7pm)
1pm - Albert Drive Studios Open day and pop-up shops
Now head west along Albert Drive and you'll reach the rather magical converted villa of Albert Drive Studios which is home to some of the Southside's most interesting designers and makes. Their doors are open this whole weekend along with several pop-up shops by a mix of invited guest artists in their What a Wonderful Weekend. (You can see some of the artists work in our S/side makers post from yesterday.) There will also be a pop-up cafe with amazing home baking and we suggest a couple of cakes and some mulled wine should keep you going til dinner time. (Studios open 10am - 5pm Sat and Sun)
2pm - Galgael Craft Market
Now this is walkable, but you might want to jump in a taxi as you head slightly north to visit the Galgael Christmas Fayre on the edge of Govan to see all the brilliant things that the team there have been making. Lots of lovely solid objects carved from thick chunks of wood. You can also see the wonderful boats that they make, eat some freashly roasted chestnuts and listen to carol singers. (Galgael open 10am-4pm with a raffle draw at 3pm)
3pm - Southside Film Festival
Now, if you have little ones, or if you just like a good old school Ardman Animation charmer of a movie then you'll want to get back to Queens Park now to catch the Southside Film Festival's showing of Arthur Christmas at the GladCafe.
5pm - Tramway
After the film you can go checkout the Fresh Face Alternative Winter Fayre at the Tramway to see a dynamic programme olive music and performance by young people, compared by 17 year old Fat Brestovca. (2pm - 8pm drop-in)
6pm - Malaga Tapas / Nachos
Getting peckish again already! Malaga Spanish Tapas on St Andrew's Drive is really tasty or for other spicey treats you could try Nachos mexican food on Skirving Street.
7:30pm - Classical Music
Now you've earned a bit of relaxation so go chill out and listen to the music of the Glasgow Orchestral Society at Sherbrooke St Gilbert's on Nithsdale Road.
SUNDAY 16 December
10am - Long lie then breakfast
If you made it round a quarter of the things that were on yesterday then you were doing well and deserve another big breakfast. This time, try Clarkston with Eat Deli for food then shopping in Gifted, Nuala Ash and the lovely Toy Parade. Also worth a visit as you head to our next suggestion is Bumblebee at Paul Hodgkiss Design.

11am - Scotland Street School
The Corky Film Club is taking place at Scotland Street School with this weeks film the Christmas Classic 'Home Alone'. You can also get a good look round the Beatrix Potter exhibition too.
12am - Tramway
You can see the last showing of Richard Hughes exhibition "Where it all happened once" at the Tramway which ends today and is a really interesting and unusual show.
1pm - Albert Drive Open Studios and Pop up Shop
If you didn't make it along to the Albert Drive Studios yesterday or if you needed to think about things before buying then journey back to today for more open studios and pop-up shops. (Albert Drive open 10am - 5pm)
2pm - House for an Art Lover
If you still need a couple of gifts then the House for an Art Lover's artisan Fayre should do the trick. With 23 stalls indoors and 12 outdoors. They are also a very good shout for lunch too, their cafe is excellent. (Fayre runs 12am - 4pm)
3pm - The Old Barn
Need to unwind, then travel to the lovely setting in Pollok Park of the Old Barn and have some yoga as part of their Crafty Christmas chill-out. (2:30 - 5:30pm)
3:30pm - Film at The Shed
More film with a showing of "Its a Wonderful Life" in The Shed. (Hope they got the projector fixed, it was all green when we went to see NEDS earlier in the year.)
7:30pm - Comedy at The Bungo
Comedy with the Improv Dogs at The Bungo
8pm - Music at GladCafe
America music night at GladCafe with the City Sinner
(Let us know in the comments below what we've missed)

What a wonderful weekend

This Christmas, Albert Drive Studios are hosting what sounds like it will be a wonderful weekend of shopping, fun and food.
"Situated in the heart of Pollokshields in the Southside of Glasgow, Albert Drive Studios is a beautiful and charming Victorian Villa that is home to a variety of creative practictioners who will all be opening their studio doors to the public to take part in this truly unique event.
Jennie Lööf Clothes, Laura Spring and Patricia Berry Millinery will all be selling products that they design and make on the premises, from one-off pieces of fairytale clothing to hand printed bags to lovely, hand-made hats.
Joining them in opening their doors will be Edo Architecture and Vox Motus and the talented team behind “Dining at Albert Drive” also know as Hilary and Eta. They will be hosting a special pop-up cafe for the weekend serving some of the finest home made sweet and savoury refreshments in Glasgow.
In order to make this a Christmas shopping event not to be missed, a hand-picked selection of local designers have been invited to host their own stalls in the beautiful attic room. Expect to see stalls from such talents as Betty Spoke, Alan Gallacher, Hole in my Pocket, Tessa Dunlop, Eat Haggis and Ceilidh On and Karen Hepburn who will be selling all sorts of lovely treats from screen printed cards to cashmere scarves to hand painted russian dolls.
At 6pm on the Saturday evening, the attic room will be transformed from market space into a stage and the next level of the wonderful weekend will commence with an open mic night. This will run from 6-10pm. (Please note - the open mic night will be free, but ticketed so contact whatawonderfulweekend@gmail.com to arrange your ticket)."

DreamMakers

Community Arts Project with Roma youth in Govanhill. The launch is at Govanhill Baths on Tuesday 11th December from 5pm-7pm.

"Groups of young people from Roma, English Gypsy, Irish Traveller and Non Roma backgrounds in 4 different locations UK-wide (Glasgow, Bolton, Peterborough and Walthamstow) will be equipped with journalistic skills and the tools (photography, sound, video) to go out into their communities to research, record and discuss issues of relevance in their communities which impact on the aspirations of young people through a process of social documentation.
The aim of this project is to attempt to dispel prejudices among Roma, English Gypsy and Non Roma, encouraging the groups to work together, sharing skills and experience, towards a celebration of culture, a fusion of tradition and modern attitudes and to look forward to the future. It is also hoped that the project would be sustainable, serve as a model for inter cultural exchange and promote positive relationships using technology."

Govanhill Baths - Not (a craft) fair

"'Govanhill Community Baths Trust's Rags to Riches project presents an innovative redesign of the traditional craft fair format showcasing the work of artists, designers and makers based in Glasgow's Southside. We will dive into the deep end of the X-mas shopping experience providing a range of gift solutions, food, drinks served with an audio visual feast of aqueous installations and interventions."

This sounds like a fun things to visit this weekend with the Govanhill Baths being converted into an exhibition/ craft market. With artists  making a central showcase of work around a theme. There will also be workshops too.
Saturday 8th December 10 -6pm
Sunday 9th December 11-4pm
All the proceeds generated through this event will contribute towards the Govanhill Baths Community Trust ongoing fundraising campaign thus adding to the ever worthy and current ethical shopping themes.
Come and immerse yourself in our pure liquid goodness away from the drowning city crowds whilst supporting the local Southside artist, designers and makers community.'

Could you also include our facebook event page:

A date with a dame - theatre at Beanscene

Apparently we missed that this was on at Moyra Janes in Pollokshields last week. Supper theatre is a good idea in the Southside and would be good to see it happening in more places. Anyway these is a second chance to catch this play with a performance at Beanscene on Skirving Street.

Welcome to the Southside Happenings site, documenting our adventures, things to do, places to see, and other information on the Southside of Glasgow.
          documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
documenting our adventures, things to do Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions or tell us we’re completely wrong. If you know of an interesting event or a place worth a visit, feel free to get in touch with us.
