Tales of the West

Ok so last week we went on a trip. We took a little boat, sailed over the river and headed to Glasgow's Westend where we were invited for dinner at the Ubiquitous Chip restaurant on Ashton Lane. It was such an unusual little trip we thought it worth sharing. How often do you go for dinner in more than two dimensions?
We weren't really sure what to expect from the night as our friend had briefly told us about the "Ing3dients" event which was on and was billed as "the world's first interactive sensory dining experience". All we knew was that it was the result of a collaboration with Alasdair Gray and involved us wearing 3D glasses - is it Avatar 2 we feared. Luckily there were no funny blue people with tail fetishes and just lots of very tasty food.

As it was a special event there was a set 5 course menu (with veggie option) with each course coinciding with a 3D piece of video footage on the main screen. I must be honest and say I was not completly won over by this main piece which wasn't really interactive at all. I found the 3D animals rotating on the screen a little bit distracting from the food with their constant sudden movement making me feel a little uncomfortable. Later, as the night progressed, the images became more absract with smoother movement and I found these far more interesting. The room was really atmospherically light and the sound was low and rythmic and this was really effective at making you feel like something different was going on. There was also a really fun little projected pond and sky in the middle of the space with fish and lobsters scurrying for safety as you passed. These were really good fun, as were the giant slowly moving coloured landscapes against one wall which felt more connected to Gray's normal art practice, while still feeling quite fresh.
The food was delicious, I had the full set menu, plus a few bites of Ann's veggie option and it was of very high quailty. The two highlights for me came towards the end with an amazingly tender roasted shin of beef dripping with thick dark juice and the Chip desert classic, vanilla ice-cream rolled in oats. Its quite an expensive evening at around £50 a ticket but for a special occasion we'd reccomend it, though you'll have to be quick as it stops on the 31st March.
As a wee experiment in visiting other parts of the city we must say it was very enjoyable and we now challenge all our Westend friends to come over to our side and give the best of the South a try. One of the things we always regreat about Glasgow is that the different sections are not easily connected, you always have to pass through the Centre to get anywhere else.
Maybe we should organise some kind of exchange programme, we send over a dozen or so of us Southside lot and they send us back over a dozen or so of their people. Anyone like the some of that and fancy signing up to do some exploration?

Govanhill Swimmers Gala - 26th March 2011

A couple of weeks ago I came across the Govanhill Swimmers website. It made me smile alot! The Govanhill Swimmers are a group of students from the RSAMD who get to together and through performances in and around Govanhill, promote the Govanhill Community Baths Project.
The Govanhill Swimmers are looking for somewhere to swim, unfortunately the only pool they can find is closed. For now they continue to train outside and hold their swim meets and races on the streets of Govanhill as their search for a local pool continues

On Saturday 26th March, for the first time, the group will be holding their Swimming Gala within the Govanhill Baths. Go along and support this fantastic group in their quest to find somewhere to swim.

Saturday, 12 o clock at Govanhill Community Baths

***Update: There is a very interesting article on the Govanhill Community Bath's website detailing the realisation of this project, the RSAMD students involved in the project and also a great selection of photos from the Gala. click here

Tramway: Call for Creatives

Another fun little sounding project for Southside Creative types to get involved with at the Tramway.

Project description
The nexy Tramway Family Day explores storytelling and early years literature.
Explore reading, writing and storytelling in a day celebrating early years literature. Taking inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the event will take place across Tramway's spaces and be suitable for babies, toddlers, primary school age children and their families.
We are looking for a couple of things for next family day, and maybe people looking for experience in costume or set design can benefit from these opportunities.
  1. Set design / dressing - create a cost effective 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' table set that can be set up simply within 20 mins and is child-friendly. Uses 20 chairs and 2 trestle tables. Space approx 5m x 7m.
  2. Needs to be sturdy as will be used 3 times during the day. Nothing breakable or unsuitable 4-12 yr olds.
  3. Set design / dressing - create a comfortable child-friendly Alice in Wonderland-themed storytelling corner.Must be fire-proof, able to fit around 35-40 toddlers and parents within it and be simple to set up / clear away.
Thoughts so far include a 'chess board' made from black and white cushions sewn together, with foam chess pieces as extra cushions / or a garden space? Needs to sit on floor space approx 5m x 7m and withstand full day of use from babies and toddlers.3. 4 student actors required as storytellers on the day. They will be given 3 children's books each to learn and will need to perform them to groups of 30-40 parents and toddlers / young primary school children on rotation between 10.30am and 3pm. Need to have no fear as the audience likely to be distracted and noisy!
    Microphones optional.
  4. Costume design - We would love to have a queen of hearts and / or White Rabbit running around on the day. Anyone up for helping make this happen? Anyone up for volunteering to dress up?
  5. As ever event volunteers required the week before the event and on the day to help with decorations, making up goody bags etc.
Please see the event illustration (from Erin McGrath) as reference for the style we are using for event promotion and general decorations on the day.
Submission instructions
We are open to suggestions and getting creative!
The event will take place on Sunday 8th May 10am - 6pm.

Great Southside Giveaway - Cookie and the Citz

Cookie and The Citizen's theatre have recently teamed up to offer a 15% discount on pre-theatre food to people holding valid Citizen's tickets. documenting our adventures,
I am not sure how you would categorise this site, it’s not a ‘what’s on guide’ …it’s just some interesting stories about what we’re doing, or planning to do, in the Southside of Glasgow. [Now and again we might stray across the river, don’t hold it against us].
          documenting our adventures,
Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading this, it may give you an idea of what to do on your next day off, night out, or maybe just something to read during your tea break.
